Hello all:

As I have looked through my shelves to see what I will need to order for
next year, I have noticed some books that look as though they need to be
weeded. However, I am unsure because previous librarians have left them on
the shelves and not chosen to weed them from the collection.
Can you please tell me what should be done with:

1) Science books - I have many that are pre 1970. Books on microbes, trees,
you name it. They are either pictureless or contain black and white photos
(which in the case of trees and such doesn't really allow students to see
pictures of what they really look like). What is the "rule of thumb" on
weeding books in this section? Do I weed books before a certain year, no
matter the science topic?

2) I also have a huge outdated Native American section. Probably 40+ books
from the 1940s-1960s, including: A whole series of books on Indian Sign
Language, etc by Robert Hofsinde (Gray-Wolf), A series by Sonia Bleeker on
The Chippewa Indians and other books of the same idea, The Indians Knew
(Lucky Book Club), True Book of Indians, 1st Book of Indian Wars. You get
the idea by now. Again - what do I do? Weed them all - as they seem very
outdated? Is there a cutoff year that I should everything before in
reference to native american books?

Hope this email makes sense - I just don't want to overweed or weed
something I shouldn't. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
