Both the news media and librarians deal with information, but there is a big difference; the media is largely for profit, and librarians are largely involved with not for profit organizations. Just as we instruct and encourage our students to carefully evaluate sources used in their term papers and reports, is it not equally important to carefully and factually instruct students on the process behind how we receive information on a daily basis? Librarians and school media specialists can and help to better educate "consumers" of information; after all, the public is deeply affected by the decisions made by the news media. A more educated consumer will seek out sources with more care. And with a more educated consumer, these "for profit" news media entities, hopefully, will have to be more careful, more ethical, and respect the "consumers" more. This is just one of the many reasons why librarians, school media specialists, and educators should attend the National Association of Broadcasters convention.
