Dear colleagues, My 7th grade teachers have used Zlata's Diary, Woodsong, and How Angel Peterson Got His Name as the required genre reading for seventh grade in Michigan. They have asked for my advice about alternative titles. They felt that Zlata seems dated, Angel is too easy, and they are looking for a book with lots of meat for discussion and development of higher order thinking skill activities. Finding a good meaty book can be hard enough, but they also are hoping for it to be multi-cultural and not too depressing. 7th grade social studies covers Eastern Hemisphere Geography in Michigan. Do you have any titles which immediately leap to mind?????
