I only received a few responses, but they were long.  I wasn't sure if
people wanted identifying information on them or not, so I removed all
identifying information just to be on the safe side.  Thanks to those of
you who sent replies to me.

 

 

The role of the library clerk is to oversee the smooth functioning of
the clerical work of the Learning Center, and to provide technical and
clerical assistance to the Learning Center Director. Specific duties and
responsibilities in the performance of this purpose include, but are not
limited to, the following:

 

1. Oversees the smooth operation of the charge desk, including checking
in and out of materials, and instructing and assisting students and
teachers in proper check out procedures.

 

2. Maintains circulation records, keeps track of overdues, issues
overdue notices, and initiates student contact to retrieve overdue
materials.

 

3. Monitors library usage, and records statistical information as
required.

 

4. Assists in maintenance of the daily routine of LC activities, i.e. 

scheduling of classes, distribution of AV equipment, monitoring check
out and return of films, checking in and filing of magazines, etc.

 

5. Assists in the processing of new LC materials, and in the maintenance
of those materials in good condition through repair procedures when
necessary.

 

6. Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of the library facility,
through shelving of books and other materials, reading of shelves,
general neatening, maintenance of appropriate displays, etc.

 

7. Assists in the yearly inventory of LC materials.

 

8. Provides assistance to LC patrons in the location and use of LC
materials upon request.

 

9. Performs other duties at the request of the LC Director.

 

Description of Library Assistant Position

 

The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting the Librarian on
oversight of specified aspects of library operations in the areas of
information access and delivery. The Library Assistant helps the
Librarian fulfill the library's mission to ensure that students and
staff/faculty are effective users of ideas and information.

 

The foregoing statements describe the general purpose and
responsibilities assigned to this position/ministry and not an
exhaustive listing of all responsibilities, duties, and skills that may
be required.

 

*       Ability to be a positive advocate for the library program and to
support the direction/mission of the library program and that of Bishop
Kearney High School | A Golisano Education Partner
*       Understands and maintains confidentiality
*       Operates computers and other library technologies with ease to
provide assistance in all areas of library operations to facilitate the
highest possible functioning of the library program, including a vast
amount of library technology
*        Ability and willingness to upgrade skills on a regular basis
*       Attends to detail, organizes and performs tasks with a high
degree of accuracy
*       Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with students, staff, faculty, administration, parents,
volunteers, and community members
*       Assists students in routine use of library resources providing
individual instruction in using all library resources
*       Trains and supervises student library assistants
*       Assists in the monitoring of student behavior and helps maintain
an appropriate climate for learning
*       Works independently and cooperatively with a good understanding
of the support role
*       Ability to operate the school's copier systems
*       Ability to meet the physical demands of a library with a balcony
*       Prepare bibliographies, pathfinders, purchase orders, and
routine correspondence
*       Maintain Inter Library Loan process working with the Monroe
Country Library System, BOCES 1 and BOCES 2
*       Performs multiple tasks simultaneously
*       Maintain emotional control under stress
*       Works effectively under pressure and continual interruptions
*       Comfortable with change and willingness to change as needed
*       Maintains budget records, riles, statistics, and reports
*       Physically processes new materials and equipment
*       Circulates, reshelves, repairs and inventories collection
*       Schedules and troubleshoots instructional technologies
*       Understands and applies basic library organization systems such
as the Dewey Decimal System, keyword searching, and critical thinking
approaches to research, the use of the OPAC, the SIRS/Mandarin Operating
System, and databases that the library may use
*       Assumes responsibility for operation of the library and
supervision of activities in the absence of the librarian
*       Assists librarian with any other duties upon request

 

Title:     Library Aid

 

Qualifications:               1. High School Diploma

                                    2. Health:

                                        Certification of good health
signed by a licensed 

                                        Physician.  Be free of
communicable diseases.

                                    3. Such alternatives to the above
qualifications as the Board may

    find appropriate and acceptable.

                                    4. Practices good grooming habits,
with regard to personal 

    hygiene, unquestionable cleanliness of body, clothing, hair, neat 

    appearance, make-up, hair, and posture.

 

Reports to:                   Librarian and High School Principal

 

Job Goal:                      To provide a well organized, smoothly
functioning library 

environment in which students can take full advantage of the 

materials available.

 

Minimum Performance Expectations:

 

1.      Types and processes orders, reports, bibliographies, forms,
library schedules, overdue notices and lists, library policies and the
like, as requested by the librarian. 
2.      Processes materials selected by the librarian for both
Elementary and Jr. High/High School libraries; assigning call number,
dollar value, date of acquisition and creating marc record before
shelving item 
3.      Maintains computer card catalog, vertical file of maps,
publishers' catalogs, Teacher's Professional Shelf, New Fiction,
magazine storage area and the like. 
4.      Writes notices and letters concerning overdue, lost & damaged
materials and collects monetary damages for any materials. 
5.      Makes simple repairs on damaged books and processes more
severely damaged books for repair at the bindery. 
6.      Monitors and supervises attendance in the library when not
assigned other duties. 
7.      Readies books for reserve on students, teachers, or community
requests. 
8.      Accepts and processes Interlibrary Loan requests for students,
teachers, or community under the supervision of the librarian. 
9.      Prepares current magazines for shelving and maintains the back
issues. 
10.     Conducts annual inventory of library materials, and the
preparation of lists of missing books and books to be discarded
according to established policy. 
11.     Supervises Checkout of materials by Students, Faculty, and
Community. 
12.     Shelves returned items. 
13.     Maintains current inventory of supplies and suggest items for
acquisition as needed




 

14.     Uses the electronic research materials and is able to direct and
assist students in their use of said materials, i.e.: Electronic
Library, Internet Searching, Ebsco Magazine Index, Encarta, Electronic
Card Catalog. 
15.     Photocopies any new magazine's table of contents for circulation
amongst the professional staff. 
16.     Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library
and its displays, creates and posts monthly bulletin board displays in
hallway. 
17.     Displays a pleasing happy, helpful personality that will
encourage students to use the library. 
18.     Attends 1 day, paid workshop each year to further professional
training as suggested by librarian/administration. 
19.     Maintain a clean and safe environment for students. 
20.     Cleans and maintains AV equipment and keeps record of service to
said equipment. 
21.     Monitor Study Halls (attendance, passes, discipline) as assigned

22.     Meal Cashier duties: take money, sell lunch credits. 
23.     "Total Out" the cashier machine after each meal, transfer data
to state forms, file forms. 
24.     Notify students with overdue accounts/charged accounts of
status, particularly the week before Student Quarterly Reports. 
25.     Other duties as requested by administration.

 

Equipment used:

 

Computers, calculators and audiovisual equipment, i.e.: VCR's,
projectors, audiotape and cd players.

 

Working Conditions/ Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently
required to use hands to handle, or feel products, objects, tools or
controls; talk and hear.  The employee is required to stand, walk and
reach with hands and arms.

 

The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 40 lbs. Specific
vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance
vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the
ability to adjust focus




Example of daily duty schedule:

 

7:30 until the first hour bell:

Open safe, open distance learning room, copy faxes received for ITV
classes.

Monday mornings sell lunch credits

Subsequent mornings selling lunches as needed.

Cashiering breakfast program

Making change

Totaling out each mornings breakfast receipts from register.

 




1st Hour:

Take attendance

Take Lunch Count

Record breakfast register receipts

Straighten existing magazines and newspapers; add each day new material
as donated or received

Monitor students in study hall

ITV classes 3 day per week

 

2nd Hour:

Take attendance

Monitor students in Study Hall

 

3rd Hour

Work on library tasks (see previous page)

 

4th Hour

Work on library tasks

Leave early for lunchroom duty

 


Lunch/ 5th Hour


Cashier Lunch for Sr. High

Sell lunches as needed

Make change as needed

Wipe tables and cashier as needed

Cashier lunch for the Jr. High

Sell lunch tickets as needed

Make change as needed

Total out the register receipts from that day's lunch.




6th hour

Take attendance

Monitor study hall

Record that day's lunch receipts

Work on library duties

 

7th hour

Monitor students taking tests as needed (this hour and throughout the
day)

Work on library

 

Weekly:

Count and Clear cash drawer on Tuesdays for deposit.

Record breakfasts/lunch reciepts as time allows.

 

Monthly:

Finish records at breakfast/lunch on [1][1]excel for state monthly
