My target was for an open source program like Adobe Dreamweaver for
making web pages.

Here is the list.

SeaMonkey, from Mozilla, has a composer function. It doesn't appear as
powerful as Dreamweaver, but it's
simple, useable and free. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/

Try NVU.  Go to www.nvu.com and download their software.  It's free and
easy to use.  I'm taking a web design class right now and that's what
we're using.

For most teachers DWeaver just too big a learning curve and too
expensive ..... and if not used regularly we just forget what does what
..  fortunately there are many free Web 2.0 options now available to use
..... see the lists at  http://www.shambles.net/pages/school/BuildW/ and
http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/infolit/startpage/I was going
back into my e-mail and deleting and found your post about a webpage
composer.  I'm taking a class right now, and the teacher is requiring us
to use SeaMonkey from mozilla.  (it is under projects in the products
area.)  I'm not sure how good it is, since I'm not happy to be forced to
use it to make a webquest, but it is another option, and it is
free!Deborah, we use Joomala at our school. It's open source- I'm not
crazy about it mostly because I loved Front Page and thought it was much
more creative and easier to use. It just seem like the Jomala template
wastes so much space on a page. If you want to see what it looks like

I was just in a district that used SWIFT and everyone found it easy.
Teachers could easily and quickly update their webpages.  It's very user
friendly, but does have some drawbacks.  But for the most part the
positives seemed to outweigh the drawbacks at that particular district
(Shoreline in WA state).  But I do not know how much it cost the
district.  Perhaps that was one of the drawbacks, but I know they had a
tech levy that passed and maybe that was included in the levy so it
wasn't a direct cost for the school.  I could find out if you need me
to, unless you already know SWIFT and aren't interested.
