Sensys 2007 Student Travel Grant Program

(Sincere apologies if multiple copies of this announcement is received)

Overview
--------

Sensys 2007 expects to receive a limited number of travel grants from
the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The grants aim to support
graduate students in U.S. academic institutions to attend the 5th ACM
Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (Sensys 2007) in
Sydney, Australia on November 6-9, 2007. An important goal is to broaden
participation in the conference by supporting students with interests in
sensor network research who would otherwise be unable to attend.

*** IMPORTANT: Applicants should note that although we have every
reason to expect that the funding is forthcoming, final approval by
NSF for the travel grants is pending. Hence, it is possible, although
very unlikely, that no award will be given due to unavailable funding.

Form and Amount of Support
--------------------------

The support is intended to defray, but not necessarily to cover
entirely, the costs of attending the conference. The costs include
transportation, hotel, and meals. Student conference registration
will be waived for student awarded travel grants. We expect to award
approximately fourteen student travel grants, at an amount not to
exceed $1800 per grant.

The award will be will be handled via reimbursements. Each legitimate
expense must be documented with an original official receipt (e.g.,
air ticket and hotel receipt). The reimbursement will be sent as a
check via postal mail six to eight weeks after submitting the
reimbursement forms and supporting receipts. Further details of the
reimbursement procedure will be communicated to the award recipients.

Awardees who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents will also
need to provide a copy of their passport, the I-94 form, and a valid
student visa.

*** IMPORTANT: It is the responsibility of the successful applicants
to make sure that he/she will have a suitable travel visa to attend the
conference in Australia. Further information on the visa application can
be found at:

 http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/
 http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/index.htm

How to Apply
------------

1) The applicant should send an application containing:

- A vita, containing basic information such as the degrees earned, the
current academic institution and degree objective, relevant
coursework and grades, and relevant publications or other research
 output.

- A letter that (i) briefly summarizes the applicant's current
research interests and relevant research accomplishments; (ii)
states the conferences/workshops, if any, previously attended; (iii)
discusses how attendance in Sensys 2007 will benefit the
professional development of the applicant, including the technical
sessions that are particularly interesting; and (iv) any other
relevant information that the applicant feels is particularly
noteworthy (but please keep it brief).

2) The advisor should send a supporting letter for the application
stating (i) the name of the student applicant; (ii) that the student
is a Ph.D. student in good standing in his/her institution; (iii) a
brief evaluation of the student's strengths in areas of interest to
Sensys; and (iv) why the student is in need of a travel grant (in
particular, if the student is the coauthor of an accepted paper, the
letter must specify if the other co-authors will be attending and
 presenting the work).

Applications and the support letters should be emailed by the
applicant and the applicant's advisor, respectively, to

 sensys2007@ucmerced.edu

with subject line "Sensys Student Travel Grant Application" or "Sensys
Student Travel Grant Support letter". ASCII format is strongly
preferred, although PDF format is acceptable.

The goal of the travel student program is to broaden the participation
of students from various universities. Women and minorities students,
as well as students pursing their graduate studies in Minority Serving
Institutions, such as, Historically Black Universities, Hispanic
Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and
institutions that serve Pacific Islanders and persons with
disabilities will be given preference when other qualifications are
similar and any other criteria as appropriate will be used to
encourage wider participation in the conference.

Important Dates
---------------

Submission deadline: September 10, 2007

Notification of award: approximately September 17, 2007 (subject to
formal approval of funding by the NSF)
