My original post: Hello everyone, Stopped in at school today and one of our younger teachers asked for my recommendation on what he should read now that the HP series is complete. I drew a blank. Suggested the Lord of the Rings triology, he didn't like that idea. Any of you have a suggestion I might give him? He's very much into sports but I'm not sure if he'd like to read about it. Thanks in advance! Mary --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow, I've gotten at least 20 responses and I think I have enough....don't want to overwhelm him! Thanks to everyone who answered so quickly. Anyway, here's the suggestions I received: Someone actually sent me an article she found on NoveList called "Is There Life After Harry/" written by M. Delbridge (you'll have to find the article yourself to read it) _______________________________________________________________________ DEFINITELY suggest Jonathan Stroud's The Bartimaeus Trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye, and Ptolemy's Gate). The books are about this boy magician who learns to summon creatures to do his bidding (including getting back at his benefactor for poor treatment). He summons a genie by the name of Bartimaeus who is my absolute favorite character in any book I've ever read. He's sarcastic, intelligent, and never pulls punches (mostly done in the footnotes of the story). When I finished the final book in this series, I actually applauded. _______________________________________________________________________ Ask him what his favorite read was BEFORE Harry Potter... !!! ... then go from there _______________________________________________________________________ How about the Philip Pullman '"Dark Materials" series? GOLDEN COMPASS,SUBTLE KNIFE and then THE AMBER SPYGLASS ______________________________________________________________ This might not work, but when I think of HP for adults, I think of <Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell> by Susanna Clarke. It's a huge long book in the style of the great British Victorian novels, but it is about a 19th-century England in which magic, after lying dormant since the Enlightenment, is revived. I think of it as a novel for English majors, but it is a real treasure of a book, and the magic is lots of fun. Other than that, I would suggest anything by Diana Wynne Jones _________________________________________________________________________ I really enjoy the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. Also Dark is Rising Seriesk, anythibg by Diane Wynne Jones, Vox Series by Paul Stewart. I read a great deal of middle school and ya fantasy. How about Garth Nix, Pendragon Series, just to name a few. ________________________________________________________________ Has he read/would he like the Book of Three series by Lloyd Alexander? Or the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper? Like Harry Potter, these series are written for children, involve fantasy & folklore _________________________________________________________________________ I really enjoyed the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. ________________________________________________________________ He has to read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. I believe the first title is The Golden Compass. Pullman is considered a YA author, but his books are pretty complex. He may also like the author Gaiman. . . I think the first name is Neal? ________________________________________________________________ Shadow Children series by Haddix (titles begin with "Among the..." T. A. Baron's Merlin series Jacques' Redwall series suspense novels by Mary Downing Hahn and Betty Reed Wright novels by Mildred Taylor and Virginia Hamilton __________________________________________________________________________ Love the RIck Riordan books -- series is called Percy and thed Olympians, first book is Lightning Thief. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
