My original post was as follows: I have a teacher who has taught this subject for several years now and feels that is it getting a little "long in the tooth!" She would like to continue the project with a new approach. They (as in groups) have written reports on various issues and then the groups report on their topic. Responses: Have the groups come up with a solution to the problem that hasn't been tried yet and create something to enact that solution---PSA, letter to congressmen, brochure, etc. A great topic for doing photo essays, have students create 10 minute video documentaries. Check out VoiceThread --- a great online tool that allows students to upload images, documents, etc. then add voice commentary. Webquest on monuments and memorials. Students need to beaware of the events and history that include social justice. Students will create memorial designs and explain why they are good representations of the event/people. Examples included the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, Trail of Tears, Child Labor in the US, use of slave labor on chocolate plantations. Prepare a debate with the student preparing both pro and con arguments. From a hat they will then pull which side of the debate they will defend. Played to their strength (talking) and develops some high level thinking skills. Also very hard to plagiarize.
