I get along fairly well with our tech dept, though sometimes it is definitely a matter of the squeaky wheel on my part. I am a campus technologist so I have some further rights and knowledge because of that and a bit more because of dealing with some district programs, having been around a while, and building a relationship with the folks in that dept. Our tech dept is more tech support than technology instruction support. We do not actually have any full-time folks for the latter. It's whatever the campus techs and other knowledgeable folks can fit in to their schedule. I have a flexible schedule so I do what I can. Someone else mentioned web blocking. That is a bit of an issue in our district. We use Lightspeed and can request an unblock for a lesson, but whether the person will even see and check it in time is anyone's guess. I am supposed to have a policy set for me with more rights on this but it's slow in coming. My suggestion in general on this is to try to build a good relationship with your tech dept. I help them in whatever way I can with the hardware/software issues; I have given thank you presents such as homemade goodies; I also keep them informed of what I am trying out/doing/etc on my computer (for example if I try out open source software) so they know that I am being open, honest, and trustworthy. That's my 2 cents. Betsy Ruffin librarian-technologist Cleburne ISD Cleburne, TX betsy.ruffin@cleburne.k12.tx.us Stephen Abram, vice-president of Micromedia Ltd., Canada's largest electronic publisher. "But although technology is vastly changing their roles, librarians are still seen as "trusted agents" and their role as navigators of the Internet will be critical to everyday life and the future economy." It is the policy of Cleburne ISD not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender or handicap in its school programs, services, or activities. >>> Pamela Burke <pam.burke@GMAIL.COM> 12/3/2007 12:37 PM >>> Interesting. Here's a different perspective. I *AM* the IT department at my school. You should hear the arguments I have with myself! I wonder, are there many other solo sysadmin/tech support teacher/ librarians on the list?
