I will keep Bruce Catton because of his stature as a historian. Also,
in my situation, circulation statistics can be unreliable, because we
often have teachers bring students to do research and they do not allow
them to check out the books. I teach the students how to do research
using the index and Table of Contents and students take notes. So the
books may be utilized without being checked out. I think Catton's
writings are still being relied upon for history textbooks (check out
the bibliographies of your school's history textbooks). We also have
Shelby Foote's Civil War Histories. Is there another Civil War
historian that has become prominent recently with the depth and breathe
of coverage that these two older historians offer?

This is a very good question. Please discuss on the listserv with
reasoning for keeping or discarding.

Subject: TARGET: SEC: Weeding Civil War (Bruce Catton)

My father, a Civil War buff, is probably spinning in his grave at the
thought that I would be considering weeding Bruce Catton books from the
Civil War collection. Catton, in the middle of the century, was a giant
among Civil War historians and was one of the founding editors of
American
Heritage Magazine, but the last time any of his titles went out was
1987.

Any thoughts?

TIA,
Paul

"I really didn't realize the librarians were, you know, such a dangerous
group. They are subversive. You think they're just sitting there at the
desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution,
man.
I wouldn't mess with them." Michael Moore
