I'm at jr. high and they all remember their 5 digit numbers. However at the
elementary grades they have cards that the librarian keeps by class and uses when
they come in the library. The students hold them while they are in line but do not
take them out of the library.

We turned our 5 digit student IDs into barcodes ( Their library
number is also their lunch ID, as well as their student number and
internet PIN) -- We just used Destiny's neat report for barcodes,
and printed a sheet of barcodes for each class. I wanted everyone on
one page, so I did it with label format , so it comes 3 across, but
the teachers name isnt on the page ( because supposedly, you'd be
peeling off the labels) . I just write the teacher's name at the
bottom of the page, and slip in into a sheet protector, and then ino
a 3 ring binder divided by homeroom. When a child enters or leaves
the class, it is very easy to print a new page, and not have to worry
about re-alphabetizing business card sized library cards ( which we
used with Library World -- putting each barcode on a business card
and then filing by homeroom in business card protector pages) .

With HS/MS, who don't usually use the library by homerooms , you
could print out pages by grade level.
