I remember being physically upset when I canceled my subscription to the Readers
Guide. I loved it that much. It was the first thing I taught when I was doing my
library practicum and the college supervisor was coming to observe. I love the
green covers, the paper ones, the bound volumes. Yes, I had a love affair with the
RG.
I enjoyed teaching it for years and when I got to this school the previous
librarians had kept the RG for 20 years. It broke my heart when I had to toss it.
It hadn't been used in 5 years so I knew the time had come to "put it down." The
students here could care less about magazines. They are never read or used to
research. We hadn't any database subscriptions as the cost was prohibitive for a
private small school.
Next year I am cancelling all magazine subscriptions except for SLJ, America, and
the National Catholic Reporter. When I first became a librarian in the early 60s
the library subscribed to over 120 titles. Times have changed and I have changed
with them.
Databases and the Internet killed the RG for me. May the RG R.I.P.

Greetings LM_Netters! A student just asked what replaced the Readers'
Guide to Periodical Literature. Is there a specific correct answer? Our
students primarily use electronic databases to access periodicals so we
haven't had a subscription for years. Thanks in advance.
