I'd considered doing away with this extra step, but when I had a book on motorcycles mysteriously "reappear" after being missing for over a year, I checked the inside to find that it was indeed my book. The thief had pulled out the card/pocket, removed the barcode and spine labels, and marked through the property stamp on the flyleaf and title page. Little did they know I had another "secret" hidden inside the book! "Dr. Allan O'Grady Cuseo" <acuseo@BKHS.ORG> wrote: Not a stupid question at all. That was the so called "secret" page where the library stamp could be found. I think the idea was that if someone stole the book and removed the pocket, etc. it would find its way home. Many schools used page 99. I remember all the uproars as to what to do when the book didn't have 99 pages. Hands were wrung, committees met - and decisions were made for an alternative secret page. do I do it? Nope - never did...thought it was just a silly exercise as wa writing it the Jobber, the price, and the date in the book. But then, I remember accession books too..and the need to carry them for fire drills. My first job in a library (as a page) when I was 14 was to cover the inside of all magazines with this brown paper to reinforce them. Spent hours, glue, and paper to reinforce something that was so cheap anyway. There are many of those "old" procedures which we would do. Did keep us busy! All the librarians in our district stamp a certain page with the library's name and address. I've been dutifully stamping page 53 of every new book for five years, and I have no idea why I do it. I stamp the title page and the pocket. It's time-consuming stamp another page, and it surely doesn't add to the aesthetic appeal of the book. Do you do this? I'd say this was a stupid question, but surely no librarians believe there IS a stupid question:) -- Sandra Lingo, Librarian Delhi Middle School 5280 Foley Road Cincinnati, Ohio 45238 slingo47@fuse.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
