Colleagues,

Our school is thinking of getting Safari Montage next school year. I
like the package and the idea that your can download from the server in
the library that stream it like United Streaming. =20

My question is; did your DVD purchases decrease after your teachers
start using Safari Montage, or are you still buying DVD's for your
collection? I could not find a suitable answer in the archives.

Thanks.

Subject: GEN ELEM- transition times

I'm about to start my field experience in an elementary school and would
like to compile a list of ideas/activites/games to help students in the
transition times - when they arrive at the library and when they've
already
checked out their book and are waiting to leave to go to their next
activity.

Especially since I won't know their names, it would be very helpful to
have
a brief activity that would be related to literacy, info literacy,
problem
solving, phonemic awareness, critical thinking, etc that could be done
at
these problematic times so as to keep their attention and ward off
behavioral issues.

I appreciate your response.

Thank you!

Jennifer,

Two of my favorite Hanukkah books are Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins
by
Eric Kimmel and The Tie-Man's Miracle by Steven Schnur.

Herschel is a great read-aloud for third or fourth grades. My school is
a
4th - 8th grade middle school, and I read Herschel for my fourth graders
every other year. Trina Schart Hyman got a Caldecott Honor for her
illustrations, and the story of how Hershel outwits the goblins haunting
the old synagogue in order to save Hanukkah is a winner with the kids.

Tie-Man is a more serious book, good for advanced fifth or sixth grades.
It deals with a young Jewish boy learning something of the Holocaust
from a
door-to-door tie salesman on the last night of Hanukkah. Despite this
premise it has a very uplifting ending. You may have to read through it
several times before you present it to avoid choking up while reading to
the kids.

Hope this helps.

Lori,

A TL mentor I had when I was getting my school media certification had a
winner of a Dewey lesson. It was a two-class lesson. During the first
class, the children read some of the highlights of M's life. The TL
helped
them develop some questions they would like to ask good old Melville if
they could. In the second class, she dressed up as Melville and they
got
to ask their questions in a press-conference type atmosphere. She had
the
moustache and the old-fashioned suit and hat down to a "T".

The questions concerned some of the turning points of his life, his
belief
in the importance of saving time, and of course his DDC.

This lesson worked because this school taught in blocks. My mentor got
her
kids for a solid hour during which she did a 25 minute computer lesson,
a
25 minute library lesson, and then gave them ten minutes for book
exchange.
If you have less time with your kids, this lesson may have to be
modified.

Hello, all.

My public library system is currently featuring a link to a "return on =
investment" calculator so that patrons can find out what financial worth
=
public library access is worth. You enter how many books, audiobooks, =
reference questions, etc., you've used over the year and see how much =
money you saved by using the library. =20

The figures that are built into the system are a little high to
perfectly =
represent our school library ($12 for every reference question!), but
it's =
an interesting idea. If our school library didn't exist, and the =
community had to buy all the materials and services we provide, they'd
be =
shelling out about half a million. School libraries are a bargain!

I'd love to see an adaptation of this for school libraries to link to!

Subject: HIT:Suggestions for New Librarians/Career Changers

Thank you to everyone who responded to my request for suggestions for a
new librarian and a career changer. I am now convinced that I have made
the right decision. Here are some of the suggestions you offered:
1. Rely on your teaching instincts.
2. Bone up on children's literture and read all the books in your own
library - know your collection!
3. Read all the trade publications for books and professional magazines
4. Lurk the listservs and publishers websites
5. Don't be afraid to ask other LMS teachers to show you around the
library
6. Don't make any major changes the first 6 months unless absolutely
necessary
7. Keep an open mind
8. Get training in all areas
9. Observe and participate in different school libraries - elementary to
high school
10. Get to know your collection and databases
11. Know the curriculum so you collaborate on the units taught by the
other teachers
12. Again, read library journals and keep up on the newest books
avaliable for your level of library
I was told "it's a great gig!" and it would be a decision I will
never regret. Thank you for your suggestions and words of encouragement!
I will definitely make use of them as I begin my new teaching
assignment.

Oh, how right you are; what a great conversation. I sent a note earlier
to
the original target telling about learning in library school that we
stamped
the "hidden page, number 25 in my schools" in case the book was lost in
a
bindery or a valuable book taken in the rebinding process. I stopped
stamping that page years ago as sending a book to the bindery is not
something I think I will ever do as an elementary librarian. But I do
still
write in each book, listing the date of purchase, cost and barcode
number.
I've had several books come back to my libraries sans the barcode
labels
and the pocket and I could put each book right back in the system
because
each was labeled with the info I needed. Doing that little bit of
processing
doesn't take long, but lets me handle each of my new books at least once
if
not twice and that only helps me know my collection better.
