Our MS credo is "Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best." Therefore I believe that students should RESPECT the schools belongings, take RESPONSIBILITY for borrowing them, and do their PERSONAL BEST to return them. I do not charge overdue "fees." But our 6th, 7th and 8th graders are expected to return their library materials or their computer accounts will be suspended. (I turn off their passwords.) Usage is returned when they return, renew or replace their materials. (I don't allow an exchange--but I have allowed replacement of the same title.) In the past 2 years, I've had a nearly 100% return rate. Students may ask for a one-hour logon-reprieve if they get a pass from a teacher. (If a teacher is giving an on-line test or assessment.) Teachers are requested to suggest the student return the book when meeting with a librarian. This is the one thing I had to hold over middle schoolers heads that really worked.
