I hate to come on like the Grinch, but I really need to vent. Until recently, the
media specialists in my district had a policy of not allowing students with
overdues from the previous year to check out until they had either return the books
or paid for them. Well, district administrators had the brilliant idea of forcing
us to loan out books to these students. Keep in mind that most teachers had
classroom book sets that students could take home and read. We complained but got
nowhere. Even the district supervisor in charge of media specialists was against
us! We warned them that lots of library books would be lost and that we don't have
the money to replace them but they still won't listen. The various prinicpals want
their students checking out library books. I just know they're going to come to us
in a few years wondering where all the library books are! When I say we get no
support in our district, I mean we get no support from anyone!!!

Now my principal has ordered me to check out books to students over the 2 week
christmas holidays. Never mind the fact that the district supervisor told me that I
had the right to impose any restrictions on checking out to students that I saw
fit. The reason for my not allowing them to check out is that we have a highly
transient population and a good number of the students will leave over the holidays
and take the library's books with them. With the books gone, the students left
behind will not get a chance to read them.

I am really getting fed up with the total lack of support from anyone in the
district. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do! I feel like I'm not allowed
to do my job. We are trying to teach our students responsibility but the district
has basically told us we can't. How long do you think it will be before the
students figure out they can take our books and nothing will be done about it?

Am I wrong for wanting to teach students to be responsible for their library
books? Am I wrong to feel the way I do? If you have any advice or words of
encouragement, I would love to hear from you. But please respond to my yahoo
account and not my school email account.

  Thanks for letting me vent.
