Me, too, on the chiming in. Most parents in the children's section look relieved, when I identify myself as a librarian. They are usually standing there looking dazed, because there are so many books, and they don't know one from another. They sincerely want to make a good choice, so why should I withhold information? Here's how I think of the bookstore situation: Sometimes I, a devoted shopper and clothing collector, want to know "does this make me look fat?" It is helpful to have some non-employee, with no vested interest in my purchase, give a thumbs up or down. At least, at B&N, there is always another choice. Much more difficult at the dept. store.
