Me, too, on the chiming in.  
Most parents in the children's section look relieved, when I identify myself as a 
librarian.  They are usually standing there looking dazed, because there are so 
many books, and they don't know one from another.  They sincerely want to make a 
good choice, so why should I withhold information?  

Here's how I think of the bookstore situation:  Sometimes I, a devoted shopper and 
clothing collector, want to know "does this make me look fat?"  It is helpful to 
have some non-employee, with no vested interest in my purchase, give a thumbs up or 
down.  At least, at B&N, there is always another choice.  Much more difficult at 
the dept. store.
