I will be so glad for Christmas Break which starts tomorrow. The students are driving us all crazy. So many excuses--so little time. The teachers make assignments that are due in 10 days or 3 months and the students wait until the day before to write the paper and then expect to get it typed and bibbed the day it's due. And they might have spent 4-5 hours in the library this week talking instead of working. Might as well make every assignment due the next day. They turn in their paper but not their library books. Students are turning in books they have had all semester and are surprised they have a fine. They want gum and stickers but throw the wrappers on the floor. They won't scoot in their chairs. They won't say please and thank you. A new software program is supposed to prepare students for the statewide achievement test. Because teachers don't have enough computers in their classrooms, they send groups to the library to use the 9 computers I have. The students have to answer questions correctly then they get to play a video game for a few seconds. Some of the students somehow spend the majority of the time on the game. I know I have burnout. I have been in education 26 years. It seems that students get lazier, less responsible and more hateful every year. When you question them, they have no chores (responsibilities) at home. If you ask, Do you throw your trash on the floor at home?" they say, "yes." If you see them in public with their parents they talk back to them just like they talk back to the teachers. One glint of hope. Yesterday a girl came in to get New Moon which I had promised to save for her. She was so excited she squealed and skipped out of the library like a little kid. Merry Christmas to all you patient, wise, sympathetic people.
