'Netters - Happy Holidays to all & enjoy your time with family & friends! Thank you all for sending on your database subscription favorites. Here are the selections: In Madison, WI, the students used a db called Culture Grams. I wish it was here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have EbscoHost (delivered by the Missouri Ed dept), Proquest, Grolier online, Discovery collection, culturegrams, NetTrekker, AtomicLearning, Novelist, and UnitedStreaming. I especially like (and students use) Grolier and Discovering and probably nettrekker. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- For research we use: World Book Online Groliers Online Culturegrams Nettrekker.com We get databases free from the state of Pennsylvania (Power Library). The ones we use the most are: Sirs Discoverer AP Multimedia Archive Facts for Learning Middle Search Plus MAS Ultra School Edition Contemporary Authors History Reference Center Novelist K-8 For our teachers we subscribe to BrainPop.com for streaming videos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I adore Britannica Online, and ProQuest has the Historical New York Times database. They've scanned every article from ~1850 to 2003 (five year lag, of course), so great primary documents. They even have most of the advertisements. EBSCO's Student Research Center and Kids Search, however, I'll not renew. There's no editorial oversight to ensure that the articles are appropriate for middle schoolers, and no filtering available. I'm not a prude or a censor, I just don't want my 7th grade class derailed by snickering. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Encyclopedia Britannica and CultureGrams are my top choices.
