You need to know that there are multiple lawsuits against those who used LimeWire. Many involve child porn. LimeWire figured prominently in the original Grokster case that was eventually found to be an infringing use by the Supreme Court. Carol Simpson, Ed.D. Assoc. Professor (mod. svc.) School of Library & Information Sciences University of North Texas PO Box 311068 307 S. Avenue B, Suite 205 Denton, TX 76203 940-565-3776 (voice) 940-565-3101 (fax) carol_simpson@unt.edu >>> Shonda Brisco <sbrisco@GMAIL.COM> 12/26/2007 12:52 PM >>> There's nothing like the holidays to start a conversation about copyright!! *grin* I'm curious about the use of the software program called "LimeWire" --- that allows users to share music, video, etc., online. My sister-in-law teaches in Tulsa Public Schools (Oklahoma) and told me that their school district had purchased the program for use by their teachers to use to download music and videos. (?) I questioned whether this was legal. Aside from the fact that she insisted that it "was legal", she also stated that they were allowed to download MP3 formats and change the content to burn CDs to share with students or use in class. Her comment was that since the school district purchased the software, anything that was posted online was "free" for use and downloading by anyone with access within the district was legal. Does anyone know if this program is being used like this in schools?
