I vaguely recall an important, leading voice in children's literature saying something like "we wish the complainers would just go away." The person who wrote to me yesterday is not alone in her view of those of us who object to being misrepresented. It's infuriating on so many levels, to be dissed and dismissed. Do you know that American Indians serve in the military at higher rates than others? You know how important American Indians were in America's war efforts? Back in March, I posted a review essay of four children's books about the Navajo Code Talkers. The essay is by Beverly Slapin. The four books are: Joseph Bruchac's CODE TALKER Nathan Asseng's NAVAJO CODE TALKERS Sara Hoagland Hunter's THE UNBREAKABLE CODE Kenji Kawano's WARRIORS: NAVAJO CODE TALKERS Here's the link to that essay: http://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2007/03/childrens-books-on-navajo-code-talkers.html Debbie Debbie A.
