Hi folks: I'm new to this listserv, and this is my first post. I just read an excellent white paper titled "Confronting the Callenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century." It can be downloaded from http://www.projectnml.org/ As noted in the Executive Summary: "Schools and afterschool programs must devote more attention to fostering what we call new media literacies: a set of cultural competencies and social skills that young people need in the new media landscape. . . " Anyway, I'm not seeing much of this "fostering" in my local school district (where I have two teenagers in attendance), but maybe I need to take a closer look. Just wondering how much of this is really going on?
