This seems like good news/bad news to me. I think user tagging is an
idea whose time is long overdue -- as a COMPLEMENT to hierarchical
classification. And social software is a great platform for them to
coexist. It's easy for users to tag materials according to their own
preferences and share their tags, etc. (like on Library Thing), but
there's still a physical collection that's organized according to some
recognizable system, making it interoperable with other collections and
giving some starting point for diverse users. Social OPACs are already
happening and I think we're going to see a lot more of them.

If I go into a library, the book I'm looking for might be in one of 3 or
more places, but the number is finite and relatively small. A
user-specific classification like "private investigator" or "American"
(both taken from LT top 50 lists) may or may not be at all useful to me.
DDC is far from perfect, but it's predictable. Tags can be helpful
finding aids, but are not a sound basis for classifciation, IMHO.
