Thanks to everyone for their suggestions for titles for a novels class
--11th and 12th graders

My son is a Senior. Over the past year he has read many books but 3 have
stuck with him: A Clockwork Orange, Flowers for Algernon, and Catcher in
the Rye. He has read each about 3 times. Flowers and Catcher would appeal
to girls as well as boys I think. Clockwork may be a little over the edge
as far as content goes.

Consider the Printz Award winners. You'll find them at www.ala.org
<http://www.ala.org>; click on "Awards and Scholarships," then click on "Book
Awards."

While not an "adult" novel, I think Nancy Farmer's "The House of
Scorpion" could generate lots of discussion --> about cloning, drug
trafficing, etc.

If I were teaching such a class, I would think about including these titles.
They have great themes, but the language and length are not a barrier to
getting to those themes.

I Am the Cheese
The Chocolate War
The Great Gatsby
Of Mice and Men
O, Pioneers

If you're looking to create discussion, I suggest "Monster" by Walter
Dean Myers, "Nothing But the Truth" by Avi, and "My Sister's Keeper" by
Jodi Picoult. All have some controversy to them that would lend well to
discussion.

I think some great discussion novels are:
When the Elephants Dance by Tess Holthe
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Montana, 1948 by Larry Watson
I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Some of my students are reading Twilight and can't put it down.
