I'd like to add Julia Alvarez. While some of her stuff is more adult, Before we
were free would be terrific for 9th grade.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions for female Latino writers!

Esperanza Rising is by Pam Munoz Ryan
Something by Gary Soto

House on Mango Street - Cisneros

Try-- Sandra Cicseros

I would recommend The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The
book is a series of short vignettes that deal with contemporary coming
of age issues. Well written!

I recommend House on Mango Street.

Nancy: I enjoyed /The House on Mango Street/ by Sandra Cisneros years
ago when I read it for my own enjoyment.

Trino's Choice by Diane Gonzalez Bertrand

I have two books in my short story collection that are full of different stories by
Latino authors. Maybe you could check out the stories in these. An Island like
You: Stories of the Bario by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and Riding Low on the Streets of
Gold edited by Judith Ortiz Cofer.
