I'm in the same boat. Follett's titlewave is a fantastic tool. My
collection is up to 1989 and I'm still weeding. Most of my older books
are in the fiction and poetry sections and are still in good enough
condition that I don't need to replace them. The poetry ones are rarely
checked out except Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky of course. We
also have quite a few books in our "reference" section which date back
to the founding of our school (we're 75 years old this year) which
probably pull our average down. Since Follett breaks the collection down
by Dewey numbers, I have a really good idea of the sections I need to
look at and the ones I can ignore for a while.

I have to agree -- there is a section in the Titlewise report called
aged titles that can be very useful, also there is a section in the same
report that breaks it down by decade. My collection is FINALLY up to
1990, and that came from my attacking different decades and weeding out
all but the most important titles from say the 1950's or the 1970's. I
also was able to use the incomplete records section to correct some
problems with the original conversion to the automation lo these many
years ago.

According to our latest analysis on Follett's titlewise, 1989, but I
don't get too hung up on this
"average." We have a number of older works of literature and
interpretation which tend to
"drag down" this number. However, we pay close attention to keeping our
medical, legal,
international, social issues, e.g. up to date.
