Hello, Is anyone aware of a course on civics being taught in their middle school? I mentioned to my district social studies department chair that I would like to recommend In defense of liberty and Give me liberty! by Russell Freedman and possibly some titles by Marc Aronson for summer reading, along with the ubiquitous fiction selections, because I feel our students don't have much of a grasp on the workings of our government and those I mentioned are instructive, enlightening, and enjoyable reads - to me anyway. Interestingly enough, the dept. chair had also been giving a civics course some thought and I thought I'd ask members of this far-flung group if you've done anything exciting in this area. I know that I learned much of what I know about government from my junior high days, but I don't see alot of courses like that being taught now. Thanks for your help.
