Thanks so much to everyone who responded!  Following is a great list of
titles on feelings that are appropriate for the primary grades!

 

Curtis, Jamie Lee. Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods that Make My Day.


Note: A little girl describes many different feelings and the ways in
which each manifests itself.

 

Spinelli, Eileen.  Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch.  

Note: Mr. Hatch receives an anonymous Valentine and it changes how he
feels about the world around him; when he finds out it was delivered by
mistake, his new friends rally to make him feel included and loved.

 

Brown, Marc.  Arthur's Nose.  

Note:  Arthur decides that he doesn't like his nose. He goes to change
it, but ultimately decides, "I'm just not me without my nose!"

 

Henkes, Kevin.  Wemberly Worried.

Note: Wemberly worries about everything, especially her first day at a
new school, but her parents and her new teacher help her find a friend.

 

Keller, Holly.  Nosy Rosie.  

Note: This takes on the subject of name calling in a simple manner.

 

Freymann, Saxton.  How are you Peeling? Foods with Moods. 

Note: The "natural personalities" of produce are photographed and
accompanied by rhyming text that talks about feelings.

 

Vail, Rachel. Sometimes I'm Bombaloo.

Note: Emotions bubble over in this picture book about how a child deals
with anger.

 

Aliki. Feelings.  

Note: Sometimes it's hard to explain your feelings, but this book helps.

 

Cain, Janan. The Way I Feel. 

 

Vaccaro Seeger, Laura.  Walter Was Worried.

Note: pictures and simple text combine to tell a child's reaction to a
storm.

 

Lester, Helen.  Hurty Feelings.

Note: Fragility the Hippo is too sensitive and ends up alienating all of
her friends until she is able to stand up to a real bully.

 

McKissack, Patricia. The Honest to Goodness Truth.

Note: It is about a girl who is too honest...her opinions hurt people's
feelings. Book discusses how to say things in a way that does not hurt
people's feelings.

 

Adams, Lisa K. Dealing with hurt feelings. New York: Rosen Publishing
Group's

   PowerKids Press, [1997].   

Note: This book discusses what to do when your feelings get hurt or when
you hurt someone else's feelings.   

 

Sharmat, Marjorie Weinman and Hoban, Lillian. I Don't Care. New York:
Dell, [1977].   

Note: Jonathan's beautiful blue balloon slips out of his fingers and
floats away, at first he tells everyone that he doesn't care.   

 

Henkes, Kevin. A weekend with Wendell. New York: Greenwillow Books,
[1986]. 

Note: Sophie does not enjoy energetic, assertive Wendell's weekend visit
until the very end, when she learns to assert herself and finds out
Wendell can be fun to play with after all.   

 

Howe, James and Walrod, Amy. Horace and Morris but mostly Dolores. 1st
ed. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, [1999].   

Note: Three mice friends learn that the best clubs include everyone.

 

Keller, Holly. Horace. New York: Mulberry, [1991].

Note: Horace, an adopted child, realizes that being part of a family
depends on how you feel about each other and not how you look.   

 

Mathers, Petra. Sophie and Lou. New York: HarperTrophy, [1991].

Note: Shy Sophie, enticed by the dancing that she sees in the studio
across the street, sets out to learn on her own.   

 

Bang, Molly. When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry. New York: Blue
Sky Press, [1999].   

Note: When Sophie gets angry she runs out and climbs her favorite tree.

 

Browne, Anthony. Voices in the Park. 1st American pbk. ed. New York: DK
Pub, [2001, 1998].   

Note: Lives briefly intertwine when four people meet in the park, each
then tells the story from their point of view with their feelings.

 

Everitt, Betsy. Mean Soup. New York: Trumpet, [1993].

Note: When Horace has a bad day at school, his mother teaches him hoe to
make mean soup.   

 

Sanders, Pete.  Love, Hate, and Other Feelings.    

 

Tester, Sylvia Root. Sad.

 

Mayer, Mercer. Little Critter's This is My Friend.

 

Carrick, Carol. Stay away from Simon!.

 

Kenny, Kevin and Krull, Helen. Sometimes My Mom Drinks Too Much.  

 

Wachter, Oralee. No More Secrets for Me.  

 

Zelonky, Joy My Best Friend Moved Away.
