I certainly can't speak for the Newbery committee, but I personally enjoyed
the book. I think it's an important book for my student population, as many
of them will identify strongly with the characters and the situations they
find themselves in. There are so many things that are touched on in this
little book that deserve attention: 12 step programs, the nature of
addiction, abandonment, attachment issues, absentee parents, incarcerated
parents, the nature of community, the quest for personal strength, just to
name a few. Yet, it is a sweet, funny, hopeful little story, that is short
enough and accessable enough for most readers.
When reading it aloud, I recommend a loud "throat-clearing" noise as a
replacement for using the word scrotum, if it bothers you or the children to
use the word. I agree that this element of the story does little to add to
the overall story, and was probably added as an attempt to elicit giggles.
(it succeeds)
