I always have to remind myself that in the past elementary school was grades 1-8
and high school was grades 9-12. Now our schools are k-4, k-5 and we have middle
schools or junior high schools and the ages for elementary school have changed. I
will buy this for my k-5 media center but not promote it for less mature readers. I
have not purchased other Newbery award winners because I felt they were a better
fit for middle school. This is part of librarianship and knowing your community.
Many of the older Newbery winners are of little interest to grades 5 and below. Not
every Newbery is for every child. Maybe our frustration with the award is that we
want it to be the every child's book.
