Gail does a great job at summing up our recent discussion on the media
teacher's role
in new Web 2.0 technologies; she asked for viewpoints.

From: Gail Smith <gsmith@EDISON.CPS.K12.IL.US><Subject: Adopting
Technology>

"The discussion of Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 leads me to think of the
signature line used by an LM_NET colleague many years ago...She/he
reassured
us that, "Computers will never replace librarians." and then went on to
finish
the quote with, "Librarians who understand computers will."

Why is Gail's cogent post all but ignored?

"I think, in many ways and many places, this is beginning to come
true. On LM_NET today, we are seeing a continuum from those who
embrace the new technology and encourage us to explore, to those who
still put a premium on the skills and tasks of the traditional
librarian...I don't really even know where I am going with this, other
than to
wonder what thoughts it provokes that you might like to share."

Sadly, I saw only a couple responses. It is true (I hate this cliche)
that our field
is at a vital crossroad. We have the opportunity to become leaders
guiding our reluctant and
wary administrations toward the future of technology integration and
information literacy OR
we can continue to be viewed as "book huggers". I know I'll raise the
ire of many out there,
so before you fire off a nasty e-mail to me; please realize that web 2.0
and books
need not be mutually exclusive (see my latest request to start a book
discussion blog-many are
already doing this). I love children's lit, but remember AASL's poll:
the future of our profession lies
with technology.

Here's a question...why do the media specialists, blog guru David
Warlick, a new to the
profession Christopher Harris, who refers to us as Infomancers (He, BTW,
is HEAD of a NY school
district's media services and has a tech background but is currently
working on his MLIS),
not concern themselves with books and reading aloud? See their blogs;
they're concerned with
the future of our profession; where do you fit in shaping this vision?
