Hi All, What we seem to be missing here is a discussion about methodology. The webquest, when programmed at its highest level is a fully integrated piece of curriculum that is holistic and interactive and allows students to work at their own pace. It fosters higher order thinking, task/information management, research skills and a range of information literacy skills development. When it contains student support materials it becomes a total learning experience. Add to this working in teams, student-centred learning opportunities and independent learning. When programmed properly, the teacher truly becomes the facilitator and guide. Web quests can be set up so they are engaging and relevant to both the student and the curriculum (content), while providing opportunities to show student show to apply their learning. I have never used web quest methodology and limited the program resources to Web sites only. Include all resource formats - databases, CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, videos, audio, books, charts, magazines, journals, realia. Students need to know how to use/interrogate all resource formats, not just the Web. In the hands of a good TL, working collaboartively with the subject specialist (teacher), web quests an become examples of curriculum excellence. :) BC Vice President, Advocacy & Promotion, IASL Convenor for the Transforming Information and Learning Conference http://www.chs.ecu.edu.au/TILC Barbara Combes, Lecturer School of Computer and Information Science Edith Cowan University, Perth Western Australia Ph: (08) 9370 6072 Email: b.combes@ecu.edu.au "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." How would such an activity be of benefit to eight year olds? It seems to me that there are better ways to educate eight year olds. I would rather see them doing something other than sitting at a computer." My answer: Why Webquests? Because a computer connected to the internet is a fabulous way to get information... -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
