The Merced City School District, a K-8 district of 11,000 students in California's
central San Joaquin Valley, pink slipped all 16 library media teachers last week.
The district agreed to a teacher raise of over 8% last year and is now having
trouble paying for it so the librarians got the axe. No administrators have lost
their jobs as a result of this situation. As my children attend school in this
district I am just sick about it.

The situation is ironic in so many ways:
-About 10 or 12 years ago the MCSD superintendent (NOT the current one) was named
the administrator of the year by the California School library Association for his
unwavering commitment to libraries.

-It was one of the few California elementary districts that had librarians and
aides in every school through the dark days of the nineties. And now, when funding
has risen steadily over the past few years it is cutting positions.

-The district's motto is "Every Child a Reader."
