I just noticed on the Colorin Colorado website: http://www.colorincolorado.org/homepage.php a link to a webcast on this very subject. The webcast deals primarily with ELL students, but perhaps it can be helpful to many of you. Just click on the link to the webcast that is available online anytime. Program description Many students encounter difficulty as they transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" in fourth grade, and this difficulty can be even more pronounced for English language learners. Why do so many students experience what is often referred to as the "fourth grade slump"? What can teachers do to make the transition into the upper elementary grades less difficult, especially for their ELLs? This webcast explores effective strategies for instruction and assessment that can help teachers address these important questions. In addition, you will find at this site a long list of online articles and resources related to this topic. (p. 47) There's a useful statistic if you are looking to increase or justify your budget or if you're looking to promote an SSR program. I like to collect these tidibits because you never know when one might come in handy! As someone whose budget underwent a drastic cut this year I need more ammo! The article says that fourth grade is a turning point for many kids. A 2006 survey by Scholastic found that 40% of kids age 5 through 8 read every day. By fourth grade it drops to 29%. "Kids need to use a wide range of reading materials--nonfiction and expository writing--and lots of vocabulary words."
