After reading the article and comments about the listserve discussion of the Newbery Award Winner I posted the following comments. Wanted to share with this group as well. Many readers stated the argument that parents censor reading material for their own children. As a parent I know this is true. As a school librarian I seldom see the parents helping children select books. With a K-4 school library, I often do not purchase the Newbery Award books. I make every effort to avoid purchasing books with offensive language. Parents seldom suggest books for read alouds or book talks. The entire school is exposed to the books I select. I have become aware of some families who do not celebrate holidays. This has changed my custom of always sharing favorite holiday books with every class. I am thankful to have so many books available that are appropriate to share in a school setting. Yes, some books may be great for sharing with parent and child in the home. Sharing with a captive audience at school requires some thought and selection.
