*Many thanks to those who responded to my question about a high speech class assignment.* Question was as follows: I had a special request from the speech teacher today. She would like examples of people who have been successful because of their talent with public speaking. Biographies available of these people? Books that these people have written about the art of public speaking? *Answers received:* I don't have a list for you, but years ago when I was heading up the local Optimist speech contest they had a section of people who had entered their contest and then went on to be public figures. Your local club probably has an updated information packet. I'm thinking she probably knows people who are famous because of being good speakers (Jay Leno, John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, etc.). Here is a list of people who competed in HS or college forensics: *http://www.vanguard.edu/communication/index.aspx?id=10277 <http://www.vanguard.edu/communication/index.aspx?id=10277> * Some of these people might have done oral interpretation rather than debate or public speaking events. I would add Jared Padalecki (*http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0655585/)* who competed in HS in San Antonio. James Earl Jones article: *http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/jon2bio-1 <http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/jon2bio-1> I'm not sure if this is something you're looking for but Dale Carnige is a great place to learn about motivational speaking. http://www.dalecarnegie.com/ I know that they often offer internships to college aged students. I believe that Carnige himself has a few publications about public/motivational speaking, they are a little bit dated, but the basis of a good speaker is something that will never change. His corporation also has a lot of materials on how to prepare and be successful at public speaking. On a smaller and more contemporary level there is motivational speaker Marlon Smith. http://www.successbychoice.com/index.html His presentations are high energy and very motivating! I don't know much about the materials he produces about motivational speaking, but he certainly relates to a younger crowd. * Some that come to mind... *Ronald Reagan ("the great communicator") Maya Angelou Nancy, I immediately think of John Kennedy, Bill Clinton ( regardless of politics he was a good speaker) and Barach Obama. * * -Eddie Murphy--George Carlin--Robin Williams Al Gore Al Michaels Nancy Pelosi Ronald Reagan Bill Clinton I might also argue for Mohammed Ali? When I taught speech--I used to show a bit of film of Steve Martin performing in front of thousands of people at the Universal Ampitheatre. (I used it under the auspices of "So, you think YOU'RE nervous?!"- Maya Angelou come to mind...she was mute for years.
