I have not yet read nor ordered this year's Newbery, but it is just a matter of time for my PreK-8th Grade school. If that is the only objectionable part of the book, there is no reason to keep it from the students. I would like to make my own decision as to whether or not to put it on the shelf. "Edward Tulane" did nothing for me, so I am anxious to read "Lucky". And, all the publicity will sell many more copies that it would have before. If a student asked what the word meant, depending upon the age, I'd have no trouble explaining the word, such as part of a boy's private parts. It would be refreshing to hear a student report that he "was kicked in the scrotum" rather than the other slang words we hear from a very young age, actually. If a child wants to know what it means, then they are ready. If they are not ready, the word just usually will go right over their heads. I don't think I would have any trouble justifying it to our clientele.
