I've been asked to share some of the responses that I received from my
question about ideas to use in motivating boys to read.

In summary:

Graphic novels

Sports fiction and non-fiction, gross out fiction

Magazines, newspapers, non-fiction

Booktalks

Surveys about topics of interest

Advertising, using interesting book covers, bulletin boards, etc.

Boys Book Clubs

Male reading mentors

Literature and workshops by Michael Sullivan, Jon Scieszka,

Literature:

To Be a Boy, To Be a Reader by William G. Brozo

Connecting Boys With Books, What Libraries Can Do by Michael Sullivan

"Reading Don't Fix No Chevys" by Michael W. Smith and Jeffrey D. Wilhelm

Teenage Boys and High School English by Brue Pirie

Even Hockey Players Read by David Booth

Some were willing to share their research which supported the fact that boys
enjoy reading different material from girls - material that isn't really
valued by our education system.

Sandra Lingo, slingo47@fuse.net, provided a great journal article about
her All Guys Book Club that she might be willing to share - great ideas.

Thanks to all,

Cindy Brittain, MLS Graduate Student
