I have held off commenting on the NYT article until now but just have to now
after reading two emails from some upset people. Most of the responses I
have gotten here have been very professional. Let me start off by saying I
was surprised and honored to get the phone message on my phone at school
saying, "I am … a reporter from the New York Times and would like to speak
to you."

First of all, the author of the article did phone me to make the interview
and we spoke around 30 minutes. I told her that The Power of Lucky was
beautifully written and that it was a shame some people would not be
purchasing it because of one word. I informed her that I own two copies of
the book in my library but did not think it would move very much because it
is geared to an elementary audience. Since I have no experience with being
in an elementary school, I told her that I did not know what I would do
about it (probably did say "I wouldn't want to have to explain it to a 3rdor 4
th grade student.) We did talk about book selection and I mentioned a
couple of other books in which I felt the author did not understand the
middle school audience. Because of the broad range of questions she asked,
I felt good about the interview when I hung up.

I have appreciated the frank and honest discussions we have had here about
this book and I hope we can continue to respect each others'
professionalism.
