"I have been trying to find information about why children should read award
winning children's books."

The terms of the Newbery Medal as posted on the ALSC web pages reads:

"The Medal shall be awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished
contribution to American literature for children published in English in the
United States during the preceding year."

The Coretta Scott King awards are "Given to African American authors and
illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions, the
Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of
the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the
American dream."
It is explained on the YALSA site that, "The Michael L. Printz Award is an
award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult
literature."
Shouldn't children and young adults be encouraged to include in their
reading diets some occasional helpings of books that have been chosen as "the most
distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in
English in the United States during the preceding year"?
Does it not make a better world for everyone when children are persuaded to
read titles that "promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of
all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream"?
Since there is no question that those who read a lot become better writers
and thinkers for having been exposed to more vocabulary and more ideas and
more examples of sentence structure and allusion and metaphor, is it not of
great benefit that children are encouraged to include the award winners -- those
books which are filled with exception writing and ideas -- as part of their
reading diet?
