My request:
A 5th grade teacher wants a novel unit with a setting in a different 
land form than we find in Texas.

The Brian books- north country- Canada (Starts
with Hatchet) 
Tuckett ( starts with Mr. Tuckett) series by Gary
Paulsen. The Tuckett books go in a bit of the plains setting, but then
it
varies to mountains and other areas in the west.

Horns and Wrinkles by Joseph Helgerson, a funny adventure/fantasy that
takes place on the Mississippi River.

Listening for Lions by Gloria Whelan, which takes place in Africa and
England during the Influenza Epidemic.

Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria McKernan, about the Antarctic
expedition.

Fish by L.S. Matthews, a survival adventure about modern day
missionaries in Africa who must flee to escape war.

The Andrew books are great fiction stories that deal with everyday
science.  I think the author is Greenberg.
