[LM_NET] Clear Explanation of Newbery

Could someone give me  a clear and simple explanation of what a Newbery award 
winning book is?  The explanation on the American Library Association is somewhat 
vague.  I have an understanding of Caldecott and Coretta Scott King award winning 
literature.  Thanks in advance.
