I'm at the high school level so this "Lucky" issue doesn't effect me but, I think
you have to realize that some librarians who chose not to include a particular
title in their collection for fear of controversy might also fear losing their job.
Who is there to back up the librarians who chose books that parents might object
to? Have you ever had to deal with an irate parent questioning your judgement? I
have. When I select a book that I think may be controversial, I make sure it has a
lot of good reviews so that I can defend my choice.
When I had to deal with that irate parent I was lucky that I had a strong material
selection policy in place and a supportive adminstrator to back me up when the
parent diecided to go over my head.
I don't think we should be judging librarians that chose not to add certain books
to their collection. Are you willing to lose your job over a book?

Reading is a means of thinking with another person’s mind; it forces you to
stretch your own.--Charles Scribner, Jr.

Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting
us on or by imbeciles who really mean it. -Mark Twain
