Hi Everyone- I did a lesson with my first grades today that I wanted to share. The title of the book is Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road? and the book is comprised of 14 illustrators answers to that question. The illustrators include Jerry Pinkney, Mo Willems, David Shannon, Mary Grandpre,Tedd Arnold and several other children's illustrators. Each one has their own illustrated double page answer to the question. Before reading the book, we discussed the different media that illustrators use to "tell the story". The children had all sorts of ideas of what you could use to create an illustration. Then I read and the book to the class. We examined the different answers. For example Mo Willems had one of his fowls being interrogated down at police headquarters where he is professing his innocence. I showed them other books illustrated by the featured illustrators. Finally the children got a chance to answer the question by creating their own illustrations. The class really enjoyed the lesson and the chance to create their own illustrated answers to this age-old question. Our children often ask for books by a specific illustrator since I always try share well illustrated picture books with them.
