Haven't read them yet, but an easier version might be the Eddie Dickens Trilogy.

*********** ***********
THe Edge Chronicles might be a possibility.

My students, 6-8 grade, like the Edgar and Ellen books by Ogden. The
first title is Rare Beasts.

******************************
Our students ate loving Among the Hidden Series by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
Also the Alex Ryder series by Anthony Horowitz

*************************************************

I recommend The Silver Spoon of Solomon Snow by Kaye Umansky. Please
see my booktalk for this book on my website, Bookwink.com.

I also recommend a series by Deb Gliori called Pure Dead Magic, and
anything by Roald Dahl or Eva Ibbotson.

Hope this helps!

My students who like Unfortunate Events also seem to enjoy the Spiderwick
Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi. They are different (fairies and magical creatures)
but seem to appeal to the same students.

Hi-

Students in my library have liked The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and The
Artemis Fowl Books by Eoin Colfer.

************************************
There is a series called the Eddie Dickens books by Ardagh that comes to
mind--the first is A House Called Awful End, Also, for just that droll
sense of humor some of Daniel Pinkwater's books are pretty popular around
here, esp. any of the Snarkout Boys books or Borgel.
************************************
I really like the Debi Gliori books. They all begin Pure Dead... Magic is
first, Pure Dead Brilliant, . . .Wicked and . . . .Trouble are others. They
are funny on several levels.
************************************

The Edge Chronicles are really great- much more fantasy, but a series of
complicated problems and adventures for the characters:

The House at Awful End by Philip Ardagh and the two other books behind
it are good for this level.

You might try the Cirque du Freak books by Darren Shan. They have been
wildly popular with many of my young adults.

I would recommend Debi Gliori's series. The first is Pure Dead Magic,
Pure dead wicked, Pure dead trouble, pure dead brilliant, and pure dead
batty.

The Children of the Lamp series - P.B. Kerr

Tamora Pierce books

The Alex Rider series isn't the same, but it has some of the same
elements.

Adventure, family secrets, etc.

What about the Charlie Bone series by Nimmo? It may appeal more to
Harry Potter fans, but has some of the "feel" of the SoUE.

Artemis Fowl series by Colfer

City of Ember by Duprau

Stephen King's Dark Tower series
Debi Gliori's Pure Dead series (funny too)

We have kids in mourning here, as well as a librarian and a couple parents. We
have a couple of boys who ate up the Unfortunate Events books and nothing else, so
there's sadness all around with The End. Any suggestions of similar books? I will
post a hit.
