Cook, Karin. What Girls Learn. New York : Vintage Books, 1997.

At first it is just another in a long line of moves; it soon becomes
apparent that Nick means to become a permanent member of the family.
Long before Tilden has even come to terms with the changes in her
mother, the addition of Nick to their little family and her much more
mature little sister they are thrust into the world of her Mother's
cancer. Confused and terrified the girls try to figure out what is
happening from the snippets of information their Mother and Nick share
with them and what their school friends are saying. Ms. Cook gives a
strong, albeit confused voice to a young girl who must leave her
childhood behind and deal with adult issues. Recommended 9th and up.
(Some "adult" situations, none of which are very graphic.)
