While home for winter vacation, I've had time to read various school-related publications. In the November, 2006 School Library Journal, on page 11 is an editorial by Brian Kenney, Editor-in-Chief. The title is "A Challenge to Library Directors: We've Done After-School Programming for Years--Let's Do It Better". This article is available online to SLJ subscribers at http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/ Perhaps this editorial will get all of us thinking of ways to keep libraries open instead of closed. It will take library directors, library boards, school librarians, public librarians, and of course, parents to effectively address this problem. At heart, I imagine, is the age-old question of a library's mission. Ada G.
