Many thanks to those who answered my question. I guess Decemebr 31 triggered the
error messages. I had to download a new version of WD and things seem OK now.

Windows Defender is Microsoft's free anti-spyware software. It does
a very good job and I use it on my laptop. I don't believe it comes
installed on computers. So whoever had it before you must have put it
on.

There is a beta version that just expired on Dec. 31. That might be
the reason for your message. You can install the latest
version. Just do a Google search for Windows Defender. Be aware
that before installing, your computer will have to communicate with
Microsoft servers to validate your version of Windows. I'm not sure
the implications of running on a system that doesn't validate
properly. Also, don't use it if you are using Windows
2000. Defender is no longer supported for 2000.
*********************************************************************************************
Windows Defender is a legitimate product, one that Microsoft purchased when it
acquired GIANT Corp. It is an integral part of Windows Vista, and is available as
an add-on to earlier versions of Windows, such as XP or 2000. Essentially, it is a
spyware removal tool. There is an informative article in Wikipedia, and also
information on Microsoft's website. If you are already running a third party
anti-spyware program, you probably should avoid using Defender, since there have
been reported incidents of multiple programs failing to work together amicably. If
you have Vista, you already have Defender and may not need a third party program.
