Our school is in the planning stages of creating a SSR program. I'm aware of the research regarding the importance of allowing students to choose anything they want to read, but many of our teachers want the reading to relate to their content areas. Our committee is debating how much choice the students should be given. On one end of the spectrum, there is 100% total choice, somewhere in the middle would be allowing students to read any book or magazine related to the content area (pulled from class libraries), and then the other extreme is letting students choose from maybe five different magazine articles. I would love to hear your experiences with SSR and the degree of freedom students were given in choosing their reading materials. If your school tried to do SSR with content-related materials, I would especially be interested in hearing about that and if it was successful or not. Feel free to email me off-list and I will post a hit. Thanks!!
