I pulled together some ideas for a teacher just recently about butterflies. Here are some links that you (and others) might be interested in using: http://eduscapes.com/fun/wings.htm http://www.theteachersguide.com/butterflies.htm http://www.yesnet.yk.ca/schools/jackhulland/projects/butterflies/ http://www.arlington.k12.ma.us/departments/technology/integration/k-5units/butterflyproject/Lessons.htm http://www.atozteacherstuff.com/Themes/Caterpillars___Butterflies/ http://www.atozteacherstuff.com/pages/276.shtml http://www.lessonplanspage.com/more/ScienceLAArtMathMDButterflyUnit8-BFlyPoetry12.htm http://www.kinderart.com/crafts/butterflybaggies.shtml http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/monarch/Resources.html http://www.agintheclassroom.org/060605/Teachers/ag%20cam/butterfly_lessons.html http://www.can-do.com/uci/lessons99/butterfly.html Also, if you have United Streaming (or other streaming video programs), check their holdings for videos and lessons that might be a great tie-in to the lessons. Finally, although this is a young group, you might want to consider whether to participate in the Holocaust Museum of Houston's "Butterfly Project". This project is to allow students from around the country create butterflies which will be displayed within the museum (and later archived). Each butterfly represents a child who died in the Holocaust. While you might not want to go into great detail about the Holocaust with the children, you might want to consider asking them to donate their butterfly to a special museum that will display their creation for the world to see---and, of course, for history to remember. The project can be found at: http://www.hmh.org/minisite/butterfly/index.html Be sure to identify each butterfly by writing the child's name and the school's name / city /state on the back (I'd use Avery labels and attach the information on the back)---this allows the museum to catalog and archive the creation for future use or research.
